Dear friends,
The Israeli election results affirm the enormous importance of HaMoked's efforts, together with its partners in the human rights community, to defend the basic rights of Palestinians who have been living under Israeli occupation for generations.
Rinad (alias), a 24 year-old Palestinian, wrote recently to tell us her story. Her mother is from East Jerusalem but moved to Gaza when she got married, and Rinad spent her early childhood there. Her family left Gaza due to the difficult conditions and moved to East Jerusalem. But Israel refused to grant her father any residency status in Jerusalem. He had to return to Gaza, while his wife and children remained in East Jerusalem.
As a child, Rinad would regularly go with her mother and siblings to visit her father in Gaza. But since she turned 18, she has been barred by Israel from entering Gaza. "Last year my dad had a heart attack," Rinad told us, "We were so worried. My sister and I tried frantically to visit him in the hospital, but they didn't give us a permit to enter Gaza."
Thousands of Palestinian families like Rinad’s have been torn apart by Israel's closure of the Gaza Strip and the severe restrictions on movement and residency. We call for an end to these repressive policies – but as long as they remain in force, we must help individuals and families who are suffering. To do this we need your help.
Due to budget cuts, HaMoked halted its program on humanitarian access to Gaza (such as Rinad required to visit her hospitalized father). We need to raise $25,000 to cover the cost of a new staff member to reinstate this program and help Palestinians obtain access to the Gaza Strip in humanitarian cases.
A generous backer has agreed to match every dollar we raise for this project in the next ten days. Please donate now, so we can help families like Rinad's realize their most basic right to family life.
Sending Our very best wishes for the Passover and Easter holidays. May it be a season of freedom, some freedom, for all,
Jessica Montell
Executive Director of HaMoked
